Memories

THROUGH OUR LIVES WE ARE ADAMANT ABOUT ACCUMULATING POSSESSIONS AND I WOULD BE LYING TO YOU IF I SAID I DID NOT LIKE THAT. WE WANT CARS, HOUSES, AND OF COURSE LOTS OF SHOES! BUT AS WE AGE, MEMORIES BECOME OUR MOST VALUABLE TREASURES. AFTER ALL, THAT IS ALL WE CAN TAKE WITH US AT THE END OF OUR LIVES. IN SITUATIONS WHEN FOR SOME REASON THE FATHER OR MOTHER CANNOT PLAY A PART IN THE CHILDREN’S LIVES, IT IS REALLY SUCH A BIG LOSS FOR THEM SINCE MEMORIES ARE THE GREATEST TREASURE THAT ANYBODY COULD HAVE.

I HAVE MADE MANY MEMORIES THROUGHOUT MY LIFE. ONE OF THEM IS ABOUT MY FATHER. I REMEMBER THAT AS A TEENAGER I WOULD STAND BY HIM MODELING AND ASKING HOW I LOOKED IN MY OUTFIT. HE ALWAYS ANSWERED “TE VES PRECIOSA” (YOU LOOK BEAAAAAUTIFU!!!!!) AND I WOULD ANSWER BACK TO HIM AND SAY, “COME ON DAD AND TELL ME THE TRUTH”.  HE WOULD ALWAYS REPLY BACK SAYING “TE VES PRECIOSA” (YES! YOU LOOK BEAAAAUTIFUL!!!!!). I WOULD REPEATEDLY ASK HIM THE SAME QUESTION AND HE REPEATEDLY WOULD GIVE ME THE SAME ANSWER. OF COURSE I KNEW THAT I WAS NOT THAT “PRECIOSA”, BUT I WAS “PRECIOSA” TO HIM. NOW LOOKING INTO THIS MEMORY IT BRINGS JOY TO MY HEART TO THINK ABOUT THAT SPECIAL MOMENT BETWEEN MY DAD AND MYSELF. THERE IS A PART OF ME WHO WISHES I WOULD HAVE CREATED EVEN MORE MEMORIES WITH MY FATHER, BUT COMING TO THE STATES AT SUCH A YOUNG AGE AND LEAVING MY FAMILY BEHIND LEAD ME TO CREATE OTHER MEMORIES.

ANOTHER FOND MEMORY WAS MY FIRST HOUSE AS A NEWLYWED WHICH ACTUALLY WAS A TENT IN MY SISTER-IN- LAW’S BACKYARD. I REMEMBER THE TENT WAS YELLOW AND IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BACKYARD SURROUNDED BY TALL TREES. AS THE SUN ROSE, WE WERE ABLE TO SEE THE SHADOWS OF THE BRANCHES THROUGH THE THIN TENT. WE HAD IT DECORATED WITH AN AFRICAN SHELF AND WE USED AN OLD MEXICAN CANDELABRA BECAUSE IT WOULD GET PITCH BLACK AND WE NEEDED CANDLES TO BE ABLE TO SEE. ALL OF THIS SOUNDS VERY EXCITING AND ROMANTIC AND IT WAS, BUT IT MAINLY BECAUSE WE COULD NOT AFFORD OUR OWN HOUSE. THIS HOUSE IS NOT TOO FAR FROM DOWNTOWN SANTA FE.  EVERY TIME I DRIVE BY, THOSE MEMORIES JUMP AT ME.

I ALSO REMEMBER MY FIRST CASH REGISTER FOR THE STORE. IT WAS AN OLD SPANISH WOODEN BOX WHERE I PUT THE TICKETS FROM THE SALES (IF THERE WERE ANY).  I TRIED TO HAVE MONEY IN CASE I NEEDED TO GIVE CHANGE, BUT CONSTANTLY IT WOULD BE USED FOR PERSONAL NEEDS. I CONFESS I HAVE MADE COUNTLESS MEMORIES BUT TILL THIS DAY I STILL STRIVE TO MAKE NEW MEMORIES, AND IF I MAKE SOME MONEY ON TOP OF IT, I WILL BUY MORE SHOES.
